Drywalling is a dirty and nasty job that many homeowners don't even want to attempt, which is great for us!  While most people think of the regular drywall or whiteboard where we put pieces together and mud in between. There are actually different types of drywall for different applications.

The different types of drywall

The basic type of drywall is what everyone thinks of.  It is pretty lightweight, in comparison to others, and is put together in pieces.  This type of drywall comes in different thicknesses as well.  The thicknesses range from 3/8-1" and this is the most economical type of drywall.   Sheets of this drywall are usually 4' - 8'.  This type of drywall is not moisture resistant and in fact, likes to absorb moisture.  It is easily dented and banged up and shouldn't be used in high traffic areas where people will be hitting it with various objects.  Most homes don't have flying objects but it was worth mentioning.

Green Drywall installation

Green drywall installation is used where there needs more moisture resistance than with the normal drywall.  This drywall comes with a green coating that helps protect it from moisture.  While it is moisture resistant, it is not moisture-proof, there is a difference.  It should not be used where it will be in direct contact with water.  However, it works great for the back of tile or bathroom and kitchen walls.  Sometimes it also used in laundry room walls or utility rooms as well.  It is more expensive than the normal drywall and weighs very similar.

Why install Blue Board Drywall?

Blue board drywall is also known by the name of plasterboard and is far heavier than the earlier mentions.  This type of drywall is mold resistant as well as having higher water-resistant drywall.  This drywall will need a plaster finish.  This type of drywall is great for noise reduction too. This is actually what is used to replace the wood lathe that was original to plaster applications.

Paperless Drywall Installation

Paperless drywall is drywall that is wrapped in gypsum board so that it has better resistance to rot and mildew.  Because gypsum has some texture to it, it will have to have a layer of joint compound put on over it.  Some find this type of drywall actually easier to cut than the original type of drywall.

Soundproof Drywall installation

This is the type of drywall you need to use if your child has taken up the drums. This drywall has properties that soundproof a room without the room looking like it is.  This is good drywall to use for bathroom walls that are adjacent to the bedroom as well.  There are many reasons to soundproof, however, if you are in need of quieting something down, this is a great choice.   This type of drywall is very hard to work with, as it is so dense.  Cutting can become an issue without the proper tools.

Type X Drywall

Type X drywall is fire resistant and can be layered for added protection.  It comes 5/8" thick and has a core that is made of fire-resistant materials.  Because of the thickness and the materials that it is made of, it is also good for soundproofing.  Quite often this is the type of drywall that is used around load-bearing beams which helps protect the load-bearing wall.  This is also good to use in apartments to keep the entire building from going up, should there be a small fire.

Most homeowners don't realize all of the various drywalls out there and their uses.  However, professional drywall installers need to know which is good for which application.  If you have ever seen drywall wet, you would completely understand as drywall basically melts underwater.  This could be a real problem at the end of the day.

Drywall is used in all kinds of applications.  The majority of housing now uses drywall for their walls and ceilings.  If you haven't ever seen drywall being installed then you might not realize that your home is full of it or even what it looks like.
